A Diver’s Guide to Underwater Malaysia - Macrolife

Andre & Antonella Ferrari were the couple that first brought to our attention the barge accident at Sipadan. Have been diving in Sipadan, Kapalai and Mabul islands for the last 15 years, they are certainly no strangers to the area. They are also well known for their writing and underwater photography.

I’ve been wanting to tell you about one of their books that happens to be one of my favourite reference books for identifying underwater species in Malaysia. The title of the book is “A Diver’s guide to Underwater Malaysia Macrolife”.

A Diver's guide to Underwater Malaysia Macrolife

The inside sleeve says:

The ultimate guide to the enthralling world of macro diving, this volume describes in full detail 600 different Indo-Pacific marine species, focusing on those found in the South China, Sulu and Sulawesi seas.

From colorful nudibranchs to cleaner shrimps and from exceptionally rare cuttlefish to hundreds of spectacular fish species, each card features a complete insight on distribution, habitat, size, life habits and U/W photo tips.

Illustrated with more than 800 extraordinary color photographs and written in a clear, concise, informative style, this book is the field guide of choice for all serious macro divers from the Maldives to Australia.

Phew, you really need gifted lungs to be able to read each of those sentences. I like this book because all the images inside are real photos of species. The images are sharp and professionally colour corrected, bringing out the vibrant colors of these species.

I’d much prefer this to other books that may have a mixture of colour illustrations and photos.

If you are planning a trip to Sipadan Island, I would strongly recommend getting this book.

The book was first published in 2003 by Nautilus Publishing and is made up of 468 pages.
