Skull Hill - Archeological Site at Semporna
On your way to diving at Sipadan Island, if you have some spare time and interested in archeological sites, drop by to Bukit Tengkorak (literal translation: Skull Hill). It is just 10 minutes away from Semporna town and should only take you about 30 minutes of trekking to reach the viewing platform.
The archeological site, described as a “significant archeological discover since indipendence” contains evidence of pottery shards in layers of ash, which are remnants of open kilns used for firing pottery.
Research also points at cultural contact and trade between 4,300 BC and 50 BC with other prehistoric communities along the southeastern coast of Sabah, Sulu Archipelago, Palawan, southern Mindanao, Sulawesi and the chain of islands between Papua New Guinea and Melanesia.
